This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "10th Year Anniversary of the Business Driven PMO," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Ten years ago, I gave my first presentation to the formal project management community. I was asked to present a PMO topic at a conference. The topic of my presentation was “The Business Driven PMO.” Over the last decade, I have said a lot. I have listened as well. Naturally, it is hard to boil down a decade of work in promoting this mindset into a two minute elevator pitch, but that is precisely what one must do.
The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What is the opposite of ADD?” Attention Deficit Disorder. You have no doubt heard the term. But what is the opposite of ADD? Would it be Attention Surplus Order or ASO? More and more children have or are developing ADD. School students from K-12 and on into college have ADD. New workers entering the workforce have ADD. And those workers that have been around for some time are now finding new ways to get and exhibit ADD. And, in the context of the workplace, what do we do with these ADD prone folks? We give them iPhones, we give them iPads, netbooks and laptops, social software, we let them office from home. Don’t get me wrong. All of this is has a place, a purpose, a value; but there is also a cost. And in the case of an ADD prone workplace, the cost is charged to and taken from the human element.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "PMO Manager Education." If you are a PMO manager, what educational plans do you have in mind? Do you have your PMP already? Are you thinking about getting an MBA? Though just about any PMO manager would be well served by a PMP and an MBA, by the way I don't view those as apples to apples development choices, rather just good things for a PMO manager to get, there are other options and alternatives for PMO manager education.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst project communications experience? I'll go first." The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst PMO steering committee experience? I'll go first." Naturally, there are many kinds of bad experiences that can be had with PMO steering committees. My worst experience was in a PMO in which one of the PMO steering committee members simply refused to show up and participate in the PMO meetings. As you can imagine, it is very hard to conduct portfolio management discussions, prioritizations, and selections for new project opportunities not to mention make decisions about rescuing or terminating existing projects without the full participation of all those that needed to be present.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst international project management experience? I'll go first." Having worked quite a bit internationally, it is very hard to limit this question to just one answer. Having said that, there was one international project management experience that stands out. In my first few international project management experiences, I did not appreciate the need to be able to self-medicate and to understand what your body is telling you.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst PPM tool experience? I'll go first." Perhaps one of my worst PPM tool experiences had very little to do with the actual tool itself, rather the management expectation of what the tool would do for them.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst people management experience? I'll go first." This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. And in today's podcast, I would like to share with Chapter 1 - Why PMOs Fail.
The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst PMO setup experience? I'll go first." Okay, I will admit it. I have made so many PMO mistakes over the last 30 years. And almost always, the errors of my ways could have been easily foreseen. But alas, it happens. Perhaps my first and most memorable PMO setup mistakes happened years ago. I had previously setup and managed a departmental PMO that was viewed as very helpful to the business. On account of that experience, I was named to head another departmental PMO. Without a great deal of planning, I rushed into a cookie-cutter PMO strategy that was similar to the one I had just had success with for a different business group. You know, "people, process, tools" and let's through in some training, mentoring, communicating and reporting. All of this served constituents and worked well before, but not this time.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "PMO Purpose? Simple question, wrong answer." Today, I have a test for you. Actually a quiz. I am going to ask you a question. The question is a simple question, but it is also a question that 9 out of 10 project management professions, certified PMPs, get wrong. Here is the question, what is the purpose of a PMO?

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "How to give a sincere apology." If you are like me, every now and then you find yourself in need of giving someone a sincere apology. In part 1 our last podcast memo, we talked about the idea advocated lately by many in the business management domain that goals are harmful. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Goals bad, four legs good – Part 1." Lately, it seems that where ever you turn within the business management domain, one after another expert (usually from Harvard Business School) has put out a paper on the harmful effects of goals. Usually the research findings suggest something like this, "The benefits of goal setting have long been over overstated and the harmful effects of having goals have been completely ignored. So, in conclusion let there be no more goals. Really?

Dave Garrett and Jim Highsmith need no introduction. Both giants in the industry, Dave created the largest online community of project management professionals now known as ProjectManagement.com, formerly known as gantthead. And Jim Highsmith, well if you don't know Jim Highsmith, you don't know agile. Jim is a coauthor of The Agile Alliance and a founding member of The Agile Alliance. Jim has authored many books and whitepapers and has consulted with IT organizations, product development organizations, and software companies around the world. Not long ago, Dave interviewed Jim to talk about Agile Today. This is such an excellent interview, that I wanted to highlight a few key questions and answers of the interview for you.
The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What is the cloud?" Have you heard the term "Cloud" or "Cloud Computing?" Of course you have. But what exactly is it. And why is all of this referred to as a cloud? Is it because we are all no doubt going to get rained on? Well, not exactly, though some of that will no doubt happen. The term cloud computing comes from the practice of using drawings of stylized clouds to denote networks in diagrams of systems and the word cloud, or I should say drawing of a cloud, is used to represent the internet and this technique dates back to more than twenty years ago. The actual concept of the cloud dates back to the 1950s, where large mainframe computers became available and accessible through fixed function, green screen, cathode ray terminals or CRTs as they were called.

So today, we have amassed a list of tips, ten altogether, for giving PowerPoint presentations.

In the last few months, I have had the opportunity to work with and get to know the daptiv company a little better. Their marketing manager, Satish Kumar, reached out to us with an idea for a PMO Success Webinar Series. He invited me to join one of daptiv's PMO thought leaders, David Blomhorst, who heads the daptiv Services and Solutions team, to provide a series of four webinars aimed at helping people with their PMOs.
The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Sales people - don't confuse value with price discounts." Not long ago, in discussions with a service provider about renewal of services that were not performing, they used terms like value and ROI quite often and quite loosely. In fact, it was clear that we did not speak the same language with respect to what is an expense and what is a benefit. And from there, the discussions about payback, ROI, and other such things to determine whether or not such products and services were warranted for renewal became unnecessarily irritating.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "CFO pleads, stop speaking project management mumbo-jumbo!" Last night, on my flight from Pennsylvania back to Orlando, Florida, I found myself sitting next to a CFO. Not long after the plane took off, I took out my laptop to do some work. I suppose the nature of what was on my laptop screen gave away my occupation, and after a few moments, my fellow passenger struck up a conversation with me. After pleasant introductions, he shared with me more about his company and specially, quite a bit more about what he thought of the company’s PMO. Generally speaking, he was not at all satisfied with the PMO and he cited three reasons.

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Is Your PMO Qualified?" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. I often get asked for tips for how to rapidly set up a PMO and for how to show compelling results within the first six months of the PMO that demonstrate, to everyone's satisfaction, the value of the PMO. But before getting to the magical roadmap of steps to set up a PMO, I always first ask a simple question. And that is, is your PMO initiative qualified? This, almost always, produces a blank stare, much like the proverbial dear in the headlights of a fast moving vehicle late at night.
The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo shares, "Announcing a new green PM learning opportunity." I just received a nice email from Rich Maltzman, a wonderfully kind man and expert in all things PMO. Rich just told me about a new learning opportunity. Rich and his compatriots are running a very important 7 PDU online, instructor-led course with the Sustainability Learning Centre of Canada. By way of course description, this program is comprised of four sequential 90-minute modules with engaging assessments. The assessments must be completed to advance to the next module (1, 2, and 3), and there is one final assessment (at the end of Module 4) required for completion of the entire program.

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Top Three Characteristics of an at Risk PMO" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. As many of you know, I am a big proponent of the concept of the Business Driven PMO. About a decade ago, after performing some basic PMO research, it became clear to those of us involved in the PMO research project, that the findings were showing a cluster of data in two distinct and measureable areas. At the time, we coined these to clusters Business Driven PMOs and Inwardly Focused PMOs. Today, we present the top three characteristics of an inwardly focused, at risk, PMO.

About a decade ago, after performing some basic PMO research, it became clear to those of us involved in the PMO research project, that the findings were showing a cluster of data in two distinct and measureable areas. At the time, we coined these to clusters Business Driven PMOs and Inwardly Focused PMOs. Today, we present the top three characteristics of a business driven PMO.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Green Fatigue." OKAY, I will be the first to say it. I am greened-out. I am tired of hearing about green this and green that. Okay, crucify me now. My green fatigue is not because of over use of the term, nor is it due to all of the exploitative things that always accompany if not take over such a cause, nor is it on account of government waste, abuse, and fraud related to all things green. I suppose the reason that I am so greened-out is that deep down I am a Deming enthusiast and process improvement advocate.
