Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon raises $58.9 million
LAS VEGAS, Despite the struggling economy, officials with the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon say contributions and pledges from this year's Labor Day event totaled $58.9 million. The amount was down from nearly $60.5 million last year and a record $65 million in 2008. But Lewis says he's heartened by Americans' ability to help others in need even when they're struggling financially.

Ex-ELO cellist killed in collision with hay bale
LONDON, Police in southwestern England say a former member of the Electric Light Orchestra was killed in a freak collision with a huge hay bale that rolled down a steep hill. The victim was identified on Monday as 62-year-old Mike Edwards, who played cello in the British rock band between 1972 and 1975.

Comedian Robert Schimmel dies after car accident
PHOENIX, Standup comic Robert Schimmel, a frequent guest on Howard Stern's radio show, has died after suffering serious injuries in a car accident. He was 60. Schimmel's spokesman, Howard Bragman, said Schimmel died Friday evening in a Phoenix hospital.

'Gone with the Wind' child actress dies at 76
FORT BRAGG, Calif., Cammie King Conlon, the former child actress who portrayed the doomed daughter of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara in 'Gone With the Wind,' has died at the age of 76. She died of lung cancer Wednesday morning at her Fort Bragg home on California's north coast, said friend Bruce Lewis. Her son, Matthew Ned Conlon, was by her side.

French 'Spider-Man' in Sydney court over climb

Rapper T.I., wife arrested on drug charges
LOS ANGELES, Rapper T.I. and wife Tameka Cottle were arrested late Wednesday night on drug charges after police smelled alleged marijuana coming from their car, authorities said. The arrests for possession of a controlled substance came on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood during a traffic stop, Los Angeles sheriff's deputy Mark Pope told The Associated Press.
